Outreach Ministries Trinity Center We go to Trinity Center about every six weeks or so to lead an afternoon worship service for their neighbors, the homeless and disadvantaged in downtown Austin. We worship together, then serve a meal, sharing and getting to know them, and have them know us. The Storehouse The Storehouse is Pflugerville's connection with the Central Texas Food Bank, and they provide not only food, but social service connections for the homeless and working poor. They also have a thrift shop. We donate food, paper goods, and funds on a regular basis. We also give quite a few items to their thrift store. In August, we have an "Undie Sunday" when members bring packages of new childrens underwear and socks, which are then distributed to needy families for their kids to start school. Christian Appalachian Project We connect with CAP several times a year to donate items for the poorest of the poor in the United States. We collect gently used books for schools, hospitals and libraries. We provide backpacks and school supplies, as well as rain ponchos for beginning the new school year. In 2009, we donated an entire 18-wheeler full of dishes for the people of Appalachia. Adopt-a-Soldier Our Adopt-a-soldier project, where we are given the name and address of a soldier in a war zone. Packages of goodies are collected and sent to the soldier for his use and to share with their buddies. At present, we are sending packages to our friend and fellow Texas Episcopalian, Elias Mendoza, who distributes needed and desired items to his company in Afghanistan. They are located in an area that has nowhere to purchase hygienic supplies or snacks, books or anything else that we are used to having available. Through our giving, and Elias' distribution, we are able to provide many needed and "luxury" items that our soldiers really appreciate. Nets for Life$12 buys a mosquito net and the training to learn how to use it properly. The Episcopal Diocese of TX is asking each family in the diocese to buy one net (or more if they can) during this year of 2011. They will be distributed to people living in infested areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Each net can save three lives, and we are doing our best to provide a net from each family in the parish before Easter. Through Warm Heart International WHI is a 501.c(3) charitable organization that was formed to respond to the Companion Agreement signed between the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi to address the needs of both Dioceses. St. Paul's Vicar is on the board of Warm Heart International. Our companions in faith in Malawi need help to survive the abject poverty within their country, while the people of the Diocese of Texas can learn a great deal about faith from the Christians of Malawi. As we assist them in various ways, they teach us that our worries concerning lifestyle are so unnecessary, and their faith, hope and love of the Lord is amazing in the face of their hardships. These are a few of the projects being funded and built by WHI:
Orphan Feeding Stations, Southern Malawi The project closest to her heart are Orphan Feeding Stations where infant and toddler orphans are brought by the elderly widows of their villages to get breakfast. The children were not thriving before these programs began, and with this assistance, they are happy, healthy and energetic. Funding is difficult, and yet, so necessary to provide enough nutrition for healthy survival for the next generation. We are funding programs in four churches out in the bush country of Malawi, areas where orphans are often seen along the road with no one to care for them. These children, left without parents due to malaria and AIDs/HIV are sometimes taken in by the elderly, who also need assistance. This is the project that touches our Vicar's heart, and we, too, want to help these beautiful people survive. Water Wells Clean water is the most important thing leading to a healthy life, and many villages in Southern Malawi have no ability to get it. Through WHI's expertise and support, water wells are being built to provide water that is pure and clean for people who presently have no access. This is one of the most important projects of WHI. ![]() Schools ![]() WHI is in partnership through the Diocese of Southern Malawi to assist in scholarships for children who are academically proficient and in need of help to attend Trinity Anglican Secondary School after they have complete one of four Anglican primary schools in the diocese. This is a fairly new acquisition of the Diocese, and there is not only need for scholarships, but also great need for improving the infrastructure of the school, as well as getting a computer lab up and running. All these are being effected by the work of WHI. |
